Description: From the series "8 Views of the Eastern Capital".

The darkest print in the series, 8 Views of the Eastern Capital by Hiroshige, "Night Rain at Matsuchi" features deep pigments and bokashi gradation used to emphasise the heaviness of the rain as night falls. Only two figures are pictured in the print, and it is easy to imagine that many others are huddled around hearths with their families in the houses around the river. Unusual for a print of a rainy scene, the rain is shown to be falling straight down instead of on a slant (as is more conventional). Perhaps this is showing that there is very little wind on the rainy night, or perhaps it is simply because the fan itself is already on a slant and Hiroshige didn't want to add in any more angles to the print...
