It's been five years! Hard to believe for those of us who work here in our beautiful Asakusa woodblock print shop, but that is how long we have now been open on the famous Rokku Dori here in Asakusa, Tokyo. We're going to celebrate by giving away a bunch of woodblock prints! You'll have to work for them though - your job will be to come up with interesting captions for a group of five print designs from our catalogue.
The Prizes
There will be five Grand Prizes, one for each of the five designs:
- a free subscription to the series we will publish in 2020: 12 prints, display and storage box, and all postage.
- the scroll print that Dave made in 2006, complete with paulownia storage box
- a HangaClub presentation set: ten of the HangaClub prints, complete with storage/display box
- your choice of any three of our famous Ukiyo-e Heroes prints!
- a Gift Certificate for the Mokuhankan shop (and online catalogue) for $400
In addition to the five main prizes, we have selected twelve of our favourite HangaClub prints, and these will be given to twelve people drawn randomly from the list of everybody who entered a caption (one chance per caption entry).
The Prints to be captioned
Dave has done a sample caption for each one ... We are sure that you can do much better!
Timeframe
There is a ten-day period for submission of captions - running until November 7th. During the submission period the captions will not be shown on the site. The submission period is now over, and a three-day 'voting' period has now begun, where the captions will be displayed and all the people who have entered something will be eligible for voting on them (nobody can vote on their own submissions :-). Final selection of the winners will be made on November 11th, with the results being posted here and the winners notified.
[Update: the contest has now finished. The winning captions can be seen (together will all the other entries) on this page, and the usernames of the winners are displayed on the Prizes page ... ]
Who can enter?
Of course this is open to all. But in order for you to send us your caption(s) - and later to take part in ranking the entries - we need to know who you are, so you will need to create a username for the site. Look for the 'Login' button at the top of this page where you can do this; once you are logged in, the caption entry forms will be available to you.
