New 'ramble' video!

Posted by Dave Bull on August 14, 2018 [Permalink]

A new video has just gone up to YouTube; the first of a two-part set that will cover my early beginnings in woodblock printmaking, and focusses on the first prints I ever bought - a set of four designs based on the old novel 'Genji Monogatari'. They were designed by Okada Yoshio, and published by the Yuyudo Company in Tokyo in the late 1970s.

Loved the video David! The first print is stunning but the second one really made me gasp when you revealed it, and the fourth one too. I think it's the vermilion in both that really grabs the eye at first and the intricate carving, especially the hair, is just breathtaking!

Out of interest, did you ever pull an impression from the blocks that Okada Yoshio gave you? I'm thinking maybe you didn't because they're too special, and just examining them to understand how the prints broke down was enough (and of course seeing the physical evidence of the perseverance of the craftsmen!)

We really have no plans for pulling prints from these blocks. It would be a stunningly difficult thing to do - they are old and shrunk, and the prints are so complicated ... the paper and printer costs alone would be substantial.

And at the end of it, we still wouldn't be able to sell the prints; at least not without arranging it all with Okada-san in advance ...
