Description

These prints show the occupations of the 纐纈師 (koukechi-shi, tie-dyer) on the left and the 縫取師 (nuitori-shi, embroiderer) on the right.

Koukechi (纐纈) is a dyeing method that creates patterns by tying fabric with thread, folding it or covering sections with boards to prevent the covered areas from absorbing dye. A koukechi-shi is an artisan who requires great skill for this craft. In the image, the seated person is tying a cloth with thread. Since one end of the thread is connected to a pole and artisan is even using their leg for support, the tying process must require considerable strength.

Nuitori is a form of embroidery and a traditional Japanese craft. This technique involves stitching decorative patterns onto fabric using silk or metallic threads. To create realistic designs, the artisan employs many intricate stitching techniques, sometimes even twisting the thread. The craft requires a refined sense of color, texture, and composition, as well as manual dexterity. In the image, a nuitori-shi is working with a special frame designed for this craft.
