Description
These two prints show the occupations of the 形置師 (kataok-ishi, stencil-printer) on the left and the 筆師 (fude-shi, brush-maker) on the right. The image of the stencil-printer on the left image and the image of the stencil-printer on the first print of this series are taken from the same (larger) image of a stencil-printing workshop.
Numerous processes are required to make a fude, beginning with selecting suitable hairs for a specific type, and removing natural oils from the animal hair. Typically, about five different lengths of hair are used for a single Japanese fude, arranged from the tip to the base. In the image, the fude-shi appears to be working on the final stage of this long process.
