Description

A rare uncut sheet of match label prints, with nunomezuri backgrounds (sections of paper blind-embossed with a piece of cloth affixed to a woodblock to give the paper a pattern). The set seems to have been produced by a collectors' group in the Kansai, on the occasion of a group trip to the Kanto area in August of 1935. The title reads "花折るべからず" ("Do not bend the flowers"), and is presented on a signboard - perhaps the group saw the sign at a garden they visited. Most of those who contributed were members of the Osaka Rinshi Koyukai (大阪燐枝好友会), an Osaka-based match label group. Several of these sponsors are "the usual suspects" - names we often see signed in labels - and several produced works in another label set in our collection (interestingly, this set also features images of natural specimens). The same ten members also produced this other set, which similarly uses nunomezuri. Due to this cataloguer's lack of horticultural knowledge, the names of the flowers will be omitted, but if you know your flowers and can tell us what they are, let us know! (Update: with the help of a reader, the flowers have been tentatively identified - thank you!)
