Description

The scenes from "The Tale of the 47 Ronin" depicted in these six match label prints are briefly described below.

Print 13 (top left): Here we see Yuranosuke (disguised as Tachibana Sakon) meeting Tachibana Sakon himself. Sakon has asked for proof of Yuranosuke's identity, and Yuranosuke hands him a blank piece of paper. Sakon, realising from this unusual move that it is the famous Yuranosuke before him, lets Yuranosuke continue with his mission.

Print 14 (top middle): Akagaki Genzō (Akabane Shigekata), one of the forty-seven rōnin, stands by a brushwood fence in the snow, carrying two fish.

Print 15 (top right): This print probably shows skilled swordsman Nakayama Yasubei (later Horibe Yasubei), one of the forty-seven rōnin, showing his prowess in a famous battle in Takadanobaba.

Print 16 (bottom left): Amanoya Rihei, a merchant of Osaka who aided the forty-seven rōnin by providing them with weapons, resists torture in this scene, refusing to tell his captors the purpose for which the weaponry was made.

Print 17 (bottom middle): Otaka Gengo, carrying some bamboo brooms for sale, meets with his friend Takarai Kikaku on the Ryogoku Bridge.

Print 18 (bottom right): This print appears to show the rōnin preparing to enter Moronao's mansion.
