Description

The scenes from "The Tale of the 47 Ronin" depicted in these six match label prints are briefly described below.

Print 1 (top left): "Kabuto Aratame" (or "Tsurugaoka Kabuto Aratame" ("The Helmet Selection at Hachiman Shrine")). Here we see the evil Lord Moronao propositioning Kaoyo (the wife of the daimyō En'ya Hangan), who holds a special helmet.

Print 2 (top middle): "Denchu Ninjo" ("The Attack with a Sword in the Palace"). Hangan strikes Moronao after being insulted relentlessly by the evil lord, who is bitter about being turned down by Kaoyo.

Print 3 (top right): "Takumi no Kami Seppuku" ("En'ya Hangan's Seppuku"). Hangan, who has been ordered to carry out suicide for attacking Moronao, prepares for death in white ceremonial robes.

Print 4 (bottom left): This label may show Ōboshi Yuranosuke, Hangan's chief retainer, rushing to see his lord before the ritual suicide is carried out.

Print 5 (bottom middle): Okaru, the lady-in-waiting of Kaoyo, appears to be helping Yuranosuke dress in this print.

Print 6 (bottom right): "Shiro Akewatashi" ("Handing Over the Castle"). Here we see Yuranosuke leaving the castle and pulling out the dagger that Hangan used to carry out suicide, vowing to avenge his lord's death.
