Description
From Okuyama's "Views of Japan" (日本風景版画) series, this print is also known as "New Verdure on Lake Ashinoko, Hakone" in English. The word shinryoku (新緑) in the title literally means "new green", and refers to the new growth that comes about at the start of spring. In this print Okuyama has indeed used a lot of different green hues to give us an image of a healthy, vibrant spring on the famous Lake Ashi. The trees in the foreground are especially eye-catching, multiple green pigments making them resemble trees from an oil painting.
