His version was quite a bit larger than this, and we have 'zoomed in' to feature the dragonfly. He was an acknowledged master at designing what are known as kacho-e (a genre of prints depicting birds and flowers in combination), but it is not so common to find insects depicted in his works, something that sets him apart from his compatriot Hokusai, who left a great many such designs. This print - simple as it is - utilized a couple of special techniques. The most obvious is perhaps the use of karazuri, in which a block is carved in the normal way, but used with little (or no) pigment, creating an embossed effect in the rich washi. And if you look closely at the 'rain' falling in the background, you will see many places where the carver's knife dug random patterns into the wood. This is the kasure-bori (scratch carving) technique, which leaves textured areas - and here, a more natural effect - in the printed impression. We hope you enjoy our delicate little print, and that this dragonfly can become your 'desk companion' for a time! Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
