Description: This is our slightly edited version of a Hiroshige design from the 1830s, which he made as part of a series of bird pictures matching in format and style. The carving is fairly loose and naturalistic, with areas of 'kasure' (scratch carving) in imitation of the original strokes of his brush.

Hiroshige was never too serious with his nature prints, and this image - with its charming mood - is certainly typical of his work (this is not his only published print depicting a sleeping owl). The original version carried a short poem, which we have omitted in the interest of leaving the design as 'quiet' as possible (and, to be completely honest, because none of us here can decipher its meaning ... almost certainly an allusion to something that was common knowledge in his day …)

We are happy to bring this design to life again, nearly 200 years after it first appeared ...
