Description: The bold color scheme gives the print a very modernistic appearance. Utagawa Kuniyoshi designed this print around 1837, during the Edo period. It depicts a crab on the middle part of the stone wall, a tortoise still below and dandelions at the top. The crab seems to be a ‘kuro benkei’ species, which can be found anywhere in sea coast damp ground, between Tokyo Bay Area, southward to Taiwan, as well as on coasts in Korea, Hong Kong and India. Due to the pattern on the tortoise’s shell, it seems to be an ishi-game, which lives in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.

This version is a post-war reproduction by Adachi Company.
