Designer: Toyohara Kunichika Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: Kanjinchō (The Donation List) is a matsubame-mono play based on the Noh drama Ataka. It is about the tense verbal duel between Minamoto no Yoshitsune, his loyal retainer Benkei, and their party—disguised as mountain priests—as they attempt to pass through the Ataka checkpoint while fleeing to Hiraizumi in northern Honshu. With orders to capture Yoshitsune, the barrier guards interrogate the group relentlessly, while the fugitives rely on their wit and resourcefulness to outmaneuver them. In this triptych, Kunichika presents striking half-length portraits of a single actor in a large format, emphasizing expressive facial details and heightening the dynamism of the composition. This design privileges rich purples and deep reds, characteristic of Kunshika’s vivid color palette. The dimensions given are for each print. The paper is quite flimsy, so some of the corners and edges are creased. ![]() ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
