Description: Umegae (The Plum Branch) is the 32th chapter of The Tale of Genji, one of the fifty-four chapters of this classic literary masterpiece.

This scene captures the moment when Genji and Prince Hotaru Hyōbukyōnomiya preside over an incense competition, carefully judging fragrances to determine which will be used by Lady Akashi at her Mogi(coming-of-age ceremony for girls). Before them lie two branches of two different kinds of trees and which ornamented two jars sent by Princess Asagao—one indigo, which was adorned with a pine branch, and the other white, that held a plum branch.

There is some staining on the bottom of the print.
