Description: This charming print belongs to the series “Famous Paintings” (Meika gafu), a collection featuring diverse subjects—including birds, flowers, landscapes, and figures—by various artists, and published in 1913 by Naosaburo Yamada (Unsodo).

In this particular design, a Japanese bush warbler perches gracefully atop a rock, while pheasant’s eye plants bloom at the base. The artist employs a calligraphic brushstroke technique, lending the composition a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, yet there is also attention to detail in the depiction of the flowers. This balance between minimalism and detail reflects the aesthetic principles characteristic of traditional Japanese ink painting (sumi-e).

The monochromatic palette—composed primarily of grays and blacks—enhances the sense of simplicity, while the subtle yellow and red hues of the flowers provide a delicate yet striking contrast to the composition.

This print has slight toning, foxing, and creases.
