Description: This set of small envelopes was published by Pyon Pyon Do, a paper stationery company using woodblocks founded in Kyoto in 1920. These small envelopes are traditionally used when giving money as a present, typically during the New Year’s holiday. They are designed by Suiho Matsumura, a famous designer from Kyoto during the Taisho and early Showa era. It was originally designed as a pattern for the hem of a men's juban (undergarment for kimono), but later the first owner of Pyon Pyon Do, Ihei Okamoto, turned it into a woodblock print and produced these small envelopes.

The outer dimensions of the frame are 46 x 39 cm. The envelopes are 10.5 x 6 cm. The envelopes are framed in a dark brown frame with acrylic glass.

The designs are based on the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. They are displayed in the correct order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. The design, based on circles, triangles, and squares, is so modern that it could easily be mistaken for a modern work.
