Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications).

Image information: Hiroshige set this scene on the Wada Bridge spanning the Yoda River, just beyond Nagakubo station. In the foreground, a majestic pine tree takes center stage, two children play joyfully with their dogs in front of it. A nearby traveler leads his horse toward the inn, his saddle-cloth is adorned with the seal of Iseya Rihei (林), the publisher, and it is also visible in the left margin of the composition, accompanied by a kiwame censor seal.

In the distance, more travelers are depicted crossing the bridge. They are silhouetted gracefully against the soft glow of the moon rising over the distant mountains.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha.
