Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications.)

Image information: Hiroshige’s spring scene showcases cherry trees in full bloom adorning the foothills of Mt. Mikami, and framing the houses that line the tranquil banks of the Yasu-gawa River.

Inside the teahouses, some customers sit and enjoy the view, while travelers stroll along the riverbank.

Details of the publishers are subtly integrated into the composition. A sign hanging from the eaves bears the emblem of the publisher, Kinjyu-do/Iseya Rihei (錦樹堂/伊勢屋利兵衛), while the shop on the left features a vertical sign with the inscription Iseri (伊せ利), the abbreviated name of the publisher.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha.
