It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications). Image information: In this nocturne scene, the foreground depicts two pairs of porters outside the renowned Kame-ya (turtle shop). Judging by the diversity of the advertising signs, it offered varieties such as medicinal herbs, rice cakes, and sake. Inside the shop, some travelers are enjoying the comforts of the establishment. A large Fukusuke hariko (papier-mâché figure), a legendary symbol of good fortune for merchants and protection for homes, is prominently displayed on the right. On the left, beyond the two men seated on the benches, lies a traditional Japanese garden, highlighted by a stone lantern and a pond. A statue of Kintaro, the Golden Boy stands against the back wall. This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha. ![]() ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
