Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications.)

Image information: Sekigahara, an important post station, was located at the crossroads of the Kisokaido, the Hokkoku Kaido, and the road to the Grand Shrine of Ise.

Hiroshige’s depiction vividly captures its bustling atmosphere. In the right foreground, two customers are seated in front of a noodle shop, enjoying their midday meals. The shop’s hanging signs advertise sweet rice cakes and practical goods for travelers, such as straw sandals and fans. Nearby, another traveler has dismounted from his horse, pausing to take a meal.

In the middle distance, a handler leads two horses along the road bordered by tall, stately pine trees.

Further along, another teahouse sits perfectly at the crest of the road, inviting travelers to rest and refresh before continuing their journey.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha. There are slight creases in the lower area.
