Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications).

Image information: Mieiji, located in the expansive Mino Plain, was notorious for its frequent flooding, earning it the worst reputation among all the stations on the journey. The village lies at the confluence of three rivers: the Kiso-gawa, Ibi-gawa, and the Nagara-gawa.

The station derives its name from the Miei-ji Temple, built as a place of prayer and hope for protection against the destructive floods. In Hiroshige’s depiction, the scene takes place beside two camellia trees in full bloom and tall, graceful stands of bamboo. Beneath this natural canopy, two farmers pause, one resting a hoe on his shoulder, as they offer directions to a wandering priest. The horizon glows with a soft pink bokashi gradation, marking the beginning of a serene sunset.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha.
