Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications).

Image information: At Honjo Station, the Kiso Road meets the edge of the Kanto Plain, a grand procession is making its way across a bridge, carrying a feudal lord ensconced within closed palanquins. In the distance, two ferry boats await to transport the procession across the deeper section of the river. Stone lanterns, standing on either side of the riverbank, mark the crossing point. Beyond this bustling scene, the village's buildings are nestled at the foot of three majestic peaks: Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna, and Mt. Myogi.

This landscape scene captures a moment where nature, tradition, and human activity converge, illustrating the challenges of travel along this historic route.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by Kajikawa-kobo.
