Designer: Keisai Eisen Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 8,000$ 58.00£ 47.25€ 56.25 ![]() ![]() Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications.) Image information: This print portrays Ageo, home to the Great Shrine of Kamo, and its surroundings as captured by Eisen. The entrance to the shrine is depicted prominently, with a row of vertical banners on the right, mixing authentic shrine banners with clever advertisements for the publisher. To the left of the composition, a farmer's house stands just outside the shrine. In the foreground, a group of peasants is winnowing rice while a few travelers pass along the road. Eisen's attention to detail and ability to blend everyday life makes this a dynamic and engaging depiction of Edo-period rural life.
