Description: 'The 69 Stations of the Kiso Kaidō' is a series of ukiyoe woodblock prints created by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige between 1834 and 1836. It depicts 69 stops along the Nakasendo, also known as the Kiso Kaidō, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You can view the entire series on this great website. (Although we haven't seen the rainy version of Oiwake reproduced in the post-war publications.)

Image information: In this rural life scene a man accompanied by his servant, who carries the luggage, is entering a small village on the right side of a path. Another man is shown leading a horse away from the village. Behind him, his servant diligently cleans up the horse’s stool, a small yet vivid detail that adds realism and humor to the scene. In the background, Mount Fuji rises majestically, its peak lightly shrouded in smoke, blending beautifully with the serene countryside atmosphere.

This particular print is a post-war reproduction by O-edo Mokuhansha.
