Item from the Mokuhankan Flea Market53 Stations of the Tokaido - Meiji-era Postcard![]() Size: 24.0cm by 18.0cm (9.45 in by 7.09 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This is one of the more rare items in our Flea Market - a full set of Hiroshige's famous Tokaido designs published in Meiji 39 (1906) by Fujisawa Mankado, in Kyoto. This is identical to the set of 55 prints that was introduced and described by Dave in one of the David's Choice video presentations on YouTube, and then included in the Mokuhankan Collection online. On the publisher Fujisawa Mankado's website, there are excellent photos of the woodblocks, which are believed to be from the period .... it is very rare to be able to match up old prints with their original blocks! Each print (backed on card, ready for mailing, as if anybody would actually do that), is mounted together with a full explanation in Japanese of that location on the highway. The construction of the album is ‘accordion’ style, with the prints mounted on both sides of the pages. Condition: the prints are toned with age (the album is more than 110 years old!), and a couple are slightly soiled. There is residual water damage and tears on some of the album pages (see image below), but overall it is in not bad condition, with the binding being the original. You will need to handle it with care ... [Note: no dealer orders, please.] The album from the top angle: ![]() The back cover: ![]() The foreword and index page: ![]() Here are some spreads from the album: Kawasaki and Kanagawa, ![]() Hodogaya and Totsuka. The back of the left page is peeling. Please see the next photo. ![]() ![]() Hankone and Mishima, ![]() Numazu and Hara (the condition is perhaps the worst on this spread, with spots, and soiling on the prints and darkened edges on the album), ![]() Yui and Okitsu, ![]() Ejiri and Fuchu, ![]() Kakegawa and the colophon page, ![]() Hamamatsu and Maisaka, ![]() Fujikawa and Okazaki, ![]() Yokkaichi and Ishiyakushi, ![]() and Shono and Kameyama. ![]() ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
