The original ink brush paintings, which express the depth of nature in a world of limited ink colors, were turned into woodblock prints with dozens of impressions by master printers. This painting is based on the theme of "Can a gourd catch a catfish?" It was originally painted in the Muromachi period (15th century) and measures 111.5 x 75.8 cm. Accompanied by 31 poems, the painting also includes a written account of its creation. Considered a masterpiece of Muromachi-period ink painting, it is now housed as a national treasure at the Kyoto National Museum. The original image can be seen at the museum's website. Note: it may be hard to tell from the web page, but this print is large - almost double the O-ban size. Please check the dimensions indicated at the top.
