Description: This stunning Utamaro diptych presents a lively domestic scene set in a bustling kitchen, portraying four women engaged in various tasks. One woman is peeling fruit, her posture poised and focused, while another is preparing tea. A third woman tends to the fire, stoking it carefully, and the fourth carries a young boy on her back.

The most striking figure is the beauty at the upper right, who reaches through a delicate cloud of smoke to retrieve a teakettle from atop the fire. Utamaro’s attention to detail, from the fine kimonos to the tools of the kitchen, impregnates the scene with authenticity, making this diptych an intimate glimpse into the daily domestic life of women in the 18th century.

This is a reproduction published by the Adachi Company.
