Description: This print, from the series “Ten Classes of Women’s Physiognomy,” portrays a young beauty absorbed in reading a letter, holding the paper close to her face with both hands, suggesting her deep focus on its contents. A striking feature of the portrait is the absence of her eyebrows, which reflects the traditional practice of shaving them, common among married women or mature females in the Edo period.

She is dressed in a casual yet elegant blue kimono, which contrasts beautifully with the yellow and black patterned obi tied around her waist, adding texture to the composition. The shimmering mica background enhances the overall elegance of the print, lending a sense of luxury and refinement to the scene.

This print is a post-war reproduction by the Adachi Company.
