This particular design portrays the renowned geisha Tomimoto Toyohina. She is shown wearing an ageboshi, a traditional headdress used to protect her hair from dust and wind. She is wearing a traditional Japanese kimono on a hot day and is fanning her collar, the pale pink crimson color of her underwear can be seen through her black silk kimono. The riddle of her name depicts a lottery box (tomi), a duckweed (mo), and a whetstone (to) serve to spell “Tomimoto”; a door (to), a lantern to suggest night (yo), and a doll (hina) signify “Toyohina". The artist's attention to detail is evident in the finely executed black kimono textile, and in the carefully embossed collar, adding texture and depth to the design.
