Description: This print features the portrait of one of Edo’s most celebrated beauties, the Hinodeya Widow (the Asahiya goke). The scene captures her in a moment of post-bath care, gently drying her ear with a cloth. One notable detail is that her eyebrows are missing, which was a common practice for married women in the Edo period.

In the upper left corner, a clever rebus visually represents her name. A rising sun is illustrated, reflecting the meaning of both hinode and asahi as "rising sun." Below, a Go board and a lock of hair (ke) combine to form go-ke, which is homophonous with goke, the word for "widow" in Japanese.

This print is a post-war reproduction by the Adachi Company.
