This print, Poppin o Fuku Musume, depicts a young woman wearing fine dress, blowing a glass pipe known as a poppen (occasionally also spelled popen or poppin) Poppens were extremely popular in Japan during the early 1790s, when Utamaro is believed to have designed this print. The carving is delicate and colours on her kimono remain vivid, the background is printed with a fine mica powder. This particular print is a mid-1970s reproduction by the Takamizawa Company.
