Description: This charming portrait of the Middle Heian poet Koshikibu no Naishi illustrates a famous story about her, as described in the accompanying inscription: "She visited the Kitano Shrine and composed a poem to the effect that she came there in the hope of hearing a little cuckoo (hototogisu), whereupon a hototogisu in the painting on an ema (votive tablet) began to sing in reply…”

In the print, Koshikibu is depicted moving gracefully across the floor, her eyes lifted toward the ema hanging above her. The artist captures her elegance and sense of wonder as she gazes at the votive tablet, enhancing the magical feeling of the scene where the painted bird sings in response to her poem.

The black line is printed using woodblock, and then hand-colored, creating a delicate and refined appearance.

This version was published by the Adachi company and it includes a Japanese and English descriptive sheet.
