Designer: Utagawa Kunisada Era: Edo | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 15,000$ 115.00£ 90.25€ 110.00 ![]() ![]() Description: This print, the right half of a diptych, illustrates a dramatic moment from the kabuki play On-atsurae Satsuma no Shingata, which tells the story of the warrior Satsuma Gengobei and his love for the geisha Koman. In the plot, the evil samurai Sasano Sangobei deceives Koman into writing a letter to Gengobei to end their relationship. The inset above shows Koman writing this tragic letter, while the scene below reveals a tense moment of confrontation. A servant, depicted below, holds two wooden clappers and clogs, his anxious expression suggests he is hurriedly trying to escape the chaotic situation. Another figure, likely Sasano Sangobei, appears from behind, visibly off-balance, perhaps startled by Gengobei’s sudden and furious reaction. Although Gengobei is not visible in this sheet, his angry action of raising a sword in the left part of the diptych is implied, heightening the tension of the scene.
