Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketEvening Bell at Mii TempleSize: 24.5cm by 36.0cm (9.65 in by 14.17 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Utagawa Kunitora Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print, part of Kunitora's "Eight Views of Omi Province", depicts Miidera Temple in the evening, situated at the foot of Mt. Nagara. Miidera is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Otsu, known for its evening temple bell, considered one of Japan’s "three best bells". Rather than showcasing the bell directly, Kunitora paints the temple from a distance (on the right side of the composition), evoking the serene sound of the bell resonating through the valley. The landscape exhibits strong Western influence, particularly in the use of light and shadow to create a sense of three-dimensional depth in the undulating hills. The organic curves of the rounded hills and clouds give the design a fluid, natural feel. The earthy and bold color palette brings a modern touch to the print, balancing traditional subject matter with contemporary visual techniques.
