In this particular play, after a female mandarin duck’s husband is killed, he returns after death to seek justice for the murderer and performs a love dance with his wife. The actors' graceful hand and leg gestures are beautifully rendered, capturing the light, rhythmic motions of the dance, which represents the waterfowl. The background, featuring a stream and reeds, enhances the scene’s atmosphere, evoking the natural habitat of mandarin ducks. Shunsho’s renowned style of life-like actor portraiture is evident, as he gave each actor realistic characteristics, closely aligning their poses with their stage roles. While he aimed for realism, this print also reflects the influence of Suzuki Harunobu’s romanticized depictions of feminine beauty. The actors’ costumes are richly detailed and vibrant, transforming them into colorful mandarin ducks as they perform. This version is a post-war reproduction by Adachi Company.
