Description: From the series “Eight Views Showing Comparisons of Courtesans from Shinagawa”.

This print depicts two courtesans from the Shinagawa pleasure quarter. The courtesan Yamato is holding a folding pocket mirror and applying rouge to her lips while courtesan Kiyosaki, is holding up a magnifying glass looking at it with some astonishment and interest. There is also an optical viewing device on a small table next to them, they both were probably novelty accessories at that time in Japan.

We can notice the fantastic mix of graphic patterns on their kimonos with a joyful color palette that makes them stand out against the sober background.

This print is a post-war reproduction by the Adachi Company.
