Description: This print depicts a subtle moment from a popular story during the Edo period between a young fan seller and his girlfriend. Lady Roko, the famous beauty, is associated with the popular actor Segawa Kikunojo whose poetry name was Roko, she is even wearing an obi ornamented with this famous actors’ family crest.

In the poem at the top of the print, her beauty is complemented by a reference to the flower tokonatsu (wild carnation).

In the design, the young beauty is standing on the edge of an onsen while talking to a young fan seller carrying some black boxes on his shoulder.

Harunobu’s talent could surely capture this romantic and epic moment.
