Description: This is one design from a large set of 49 reproductions of Hokusai's work published by Takamizawa in the post-war period. Broken sets are frequently found in the markets here in Tokyo, with the most popular items missing (presumably taken out to be framed, and then never replaced).

This is a single sheet version of what would have been a double-page spread in one of Hokusai's books combining Edo scenery and kyoka poetry. It is actually a very unusual image for its era: the 'movie' has just begun - we start with a 'crane shot' view of the town, plenty of activity going on, but with most of it partially hidden by the buildings. Which of these characters will the camera then focus on ...
