Description: This is from Hokusai’s famous series ‘One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji.’

The shape of Mt. Fuji is exaggerated and extremely steep, towering against the dark sky.

Looking closely at the lower left corner, we find that Hokusai depicted the details of people scurrying under the sudden storm; some covering themselves with straw hats, umbrellas, or mats. The thatched roofs of the houses appear to be flapping in the strong wind. The trees are wildly shaken and the bell tower, seen at the highest spot, is almost struck by lightning.

In the very foreground, gray clouds are seen as though they spread toward the viewers. This image makes us feel as though we are observing this dramatic scene from somewhere in the sky.
