One of the traditional printers living and working in Tokyo for many years, Mr. Tsutomu Mitamura, has decided to try his hand at issuing some print reproductions himself. He is a huge fan of Kawanabe Kyosai's work, and has begun his publishing activities with a series of reproductions of some of Kyosai's Yokai related designs. He arranged for one of the younger carvers in the traditional crafts association, Kayoko Suga, to do the carving, and did the printing himself. --- The first proverb illustrated here literally means that mochi from a mochi store is the most delicious, in other words, one should "leave it to the experts". Here, a merchant decorates a multi-tier mochi cake with the face of Asahina, a character from the New Year kabuki play "Kotobuki Soga no Taimen". Below is the proverb "Making Mochi with a Paper Lantern", which is a humorous euphemism for old people having sex, and refers to things that don't go as hoped for. Kyosai's lively illustration fills the entire page. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
