Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketCranes on Pine TreeSize: 53.5cm by 21.0cm (21.06 in by 8.27 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [XL] ? Designer: Matsumura Goshun Era: Meiji | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: This print belongs to the set “Picture Book by Various Famous Painters” published by Aoki Suzando. It was edited by the Meiji-era artist Gessai Fukui. The designs were adapted and redrawn as reduce-scale woodblock prints after the original masterworks (paintings) by a variety of earlier artists. In this case, the original design is from Matsumura Goshun and depicts a couple of cranes nesting on a pine tree that stands out from the sea, in the middle of some rocks. A charming detail is a turtle coming out from the water and resting on the shore of one of the rocks. The turtle and the crane are two symbols of longevity in Japanese culture. A nice round and orange sun is visible behind the tree canopy announcing the sunset. This print has a fold and two tiny holes in the middle. It is toned but retains nice color for its age.
