Description: This print is from a set by Hiroshige, titled 'Eight Views of Shiba in the Eastern Capital', which consists of eight places in the Shiba area located in the center of historical Edo (now Tokyo) in Edo. The lack of framed borders and the vibrant use of primary shades is unique to this set compared to the rather dark opaque pigment often used in Hiroshige's landscapes.

The bridge known as the Akabane bridge depicted on the left leads into the residence of Arima the daimyo of Kurume. The area was also known for having the highest fire tower in Edo that is rising within the thick woods. The use of lines in this piece although it may seem chaotic, cleverly works with the use of horizontal, vertical and slanted lines. The use of these lines helps conveying the perspective and distance with each subject.

A post-war reproduction by Adachi Company.
