Description: This triptych is from the series ‘Scenes of Edo Castle (Chiyoda no On-omote)’ which illustrates the manners and customs at the Chiyoda palace and the life of the Tokugawa shoguns.

In this design, the Shogun is inspecting and observing the smoke signal for the communication system of the castle.

The left sheet depicts a close-up image of this smoke cloud and how it was elaborated: men are burning some hay inside a tall wooden structure.

The middle sheet shows how this same smoke signal looked from the distance (in this case from the palace), and the right sheet shows the shogun and its crew inside the palace observing the smoke signal.

These prints are slightly toned and have slight creases and some chiri (mulberry bark scraps).
