Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketCollecting Abalone (set of 3)Size: 29.5cm by 19.5cm (11.61 in by 7.68 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: These prints date from the 1970s/80s, and were made by the Kajikawa workshop, which was hired to produce a folio containing 20 triptychs (60 prints all). They were made at a reduced size (29.5 x 19.5cm) from the original Edo-era prints, which were in the large o-ban format. This triptych shows one version of Utamaro’s abalone divers. It is said to depict the ‘ama’ (women divers) of Enoshima. The four women are on the rocks, it is interesting how the center panel shows a mother breastfeeding his child enhancing an intimate activity in the middle of nature during a physical work like diving. Another charming detail is the transparency effect that shows one of the diver’s foot through the water with the fish swimming around. The usage of the reddish color for the outlines of the women's bodies, rather than black ink gives a healthy and vibrant impression to these prints. Please note that the prints are lightly glued to a mat paper with three windows, and will be shipped folded. There are a few slight foxing spots on each sheet.
