Description: These prints date from the 1970s/80s, and were made by the Kajikawa workshop, which was hired to produce a folio containing 20 triptychs (60 prints all). They were made at a reduced size (29.5 x 19.5cm) from the original Edo-era prints, which were in the large o-ban format.

This interesting triptych shows a group of people gathered around a well under a morning snow. It is full of anecdotes that catch the eye. The left sheet depicts the famous well placed on a wooden terrace, a man is pulling out a cord, and another one is squatting and cleaning a bucket on the floor.

The center sheet shows two mothers carrying their babies heading up to the well while two other children play next to them. Something on the left caught everybody’s eyes. A big snowball falls on the head of the crouched man, two women are looking at him worried about his condition while a man in the background is walking by with wooden stilts. A snow-covered cherry blossom branch is visible behind as well as the charming detail of two sparrows in flight.

There is a clear domination of blues that gives a cold ambiance light in reference to the snowy weather.

The prints were originally mounted in the incorrect order. We have therefore removed them from the mat paper and rearranged them.

There are a few traces of glue removal on the backsides.
