Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketMt. Fuji from the Sumida RiverSize: 22.0cm by 32.0cm (8.66 in by 12.60 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Katsushika Hokusai Era: Early Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: In the immediate post-war period, the publisher Takamizawa issued a number of prints based on designs by Hokusai, with an interesting twist - they colorised them. Hokusai's famous "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku Hyakkei) series was originally issued as a set of three illustrated books, with the entire project being done in muted tones of black and grey. The print you see here - originally a left-right spread in the book - has been re-created as a single sheet, with colours added by the post-war craftsmen. In this print, Mt. Fuji can be seen at a distance from the Sumida river bank, with crowds of Edoites happily enjoying both their hanami party as well as the view of Mt. Fuji in the distance. There are some spots at the bottom margin. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
