Description: The original model for this woodblock print was not an Edo-era print, but a scroll painting from Hokusai. The Takamizawa Company produced a large set (49) of Hokusai designs in the pre-war period, and tried to include a number of images that had never before been published as color prints. This was originally a painting by Hokusai, drawn when he was about 78 years old, and which later was made into a woodblock print. The signature in the upper right corner reads Zen Hokusai Iitsu.

A pitch black bird is perched on a rock and its posture conveys tension, arching its back. The rock beneath the bird is depicted very realistically, with plenty of growth covering it. The bokashi technique is nicely applied to the subtle blue area around the rock.

This bird appears to be a sea cormorant, which usually lives in flocks, but Hokusai depicted this one standing alone in the snow. I wonder if this reflects his emotional feelings at that particular time?

There are some foxing spots in the lower left area and the margins.
