Item from the Mokuhankan Flea MarketMt. Fuji from MishimaSize: 22.0cm by 31.0cm (8.66 in by 12.20 in) | Enlargement | Shipping Code: [L] ? Designer: Katsushika Hokusai Era: Early Showa | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: Description: In the immediate post-war period, the publisher Takamizawa issued a number of prints based on designs by Hokusai, with an interesting twist - they colourised them. Hokusai's famous "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku Hyakkei) was originally issued as a set of three illustrated books, with the entire project being done in muted tones of black and grey. The print you see here - originally a left-right spread in the book - has been re-created as a single sheet, with colours added by the post-war craftsmen. It is interesting to see the contrast between the dramatic expression of the steep mountain surface and clouds and the simple expression of the farmer, cow (or horse), and trees in the field. There are a few foxing spots at the left. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
