Designer: Keisai Eisen Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ¥ 8,000$ 61.00£ 48.25€ 56.25 Description: Eisen is most renowned for his bijin-ga ("illustrations of beautiful women") portraying women in a more realistic light than those depicted by earlier artists, replacing otherworldly grace and elegance with a less studied sensuality. He produced many portraits and full-length studies of fashions of the time. This print is from the series Imayou Bijou Jyuunikei (今様美人拾二景, "Twelve Scenes of Contemporary Beauties"). In the illustration, a geisha tucks the plectrum of a shamisen under her arm while she plays rock-paper-scissors (or perhaps she is just practicing hand movements for the shamisen...). The scenery of Sumida River (隅田川) is pictured in a handscroll-shaped panel at the top of the print (the title of the handscroll is "おもしろそう", meaning "beautiful" in old Japanese). A reproduction published by Ishu Kanko-kai and produced by Kajikawa Kobo probably in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
