Designer: Kitagawa Utamaro Era: Post-war | Currency: $ / £ / € Price: ![]() Description: This print comes from the series Selections from Six Houses in Yoshiwara and portrays the famous Yosooi of the Matsubaya house. The design is by Kitagawa Utamaro. In this half-length portrait, Utamaro offers a glimpse into a moment of intimacy as the young woman composes a letter. The paper scroll resting on her lap bears lines of calligraphy that have caught her attention. She wears an elegant kimono decorated with yellow butterfly motifs, in which vibrant reds and purples stand out against an achromatic background. Her hair is arranged in an elaborate coiffure and adorned with multiple golden ornaments. Particular care has been taken in the printing of the hair, where a double layer of overlaid strands creates a rich and refined texture. This version is a reproduction published by Ishu Kanko-kai and produced by Kajikawa Kobo probably in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Carver: Nagashima Michio / Printer: Irie Yoshimitsu. ![]() Browse thumbnail pages of various selections from the catalogue ...
